Although officially part of Panama, the area is governed autonomously by the Guna Congress who charge a fee ($20 for the boat and $20 pp) to visit the islands.<\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was the little island of El Porvenir, headquarters of the Guna Congress and official port of entry for Panama.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2051\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2051\" style=\"width: 458px\" to another island\u2026. Customs, Immigration and the Guna Gongress occupy separate rooms in the same building so it was a pretty easy check-in. Except on the wallet. For the pleasure of being in the Republic of Panama, you pay US$193 for the boat\u2019s one-year cruising permit (regardless of whether you stay only a few days) and US$105pp for the individual visas. They may be off the beaten track, but they\u2019re certainly not remote \u2013 we were gob-smacked to see the number of yachts crowded into the most popular anchorages. We were also very glad that we\u2019d bought The Panama Cruising Guide by Eric Bauhaus \u2013 it was expensive at nearly $100, but well worth it because of the detailed and accurate charts he\u2019s made. On the small island next to us was a fresh-water spring, and we watched the daily grind of water-collecting by the women. How could we resist at $5 each?? Geoff even found a \u2018lobster rock\u2019 with about 5 of the critters huddled underneath it. The thought of catching our own lobsters for dinner was very enticing but after several good looks Bruce declared they were too small, so they had a lucky break that day!<\/p>\n<figure The water here was quite murky and it was definitely more commercialized, with tourist boats ferrying people from the mainland to the restaurant and bar on one of the islands.<\/p>\n<figure I must say, we had some serious discussions about staying longer too \u2013 it\u2019s very cheap to live here (lobsters at $5 a throw!) and it\u2019s the kind of place you could easily lose yourself for several months. But if we stayed we\u2019d have to give up our opportunity to get through the Pacific this season, and we\u2019d have to wait another 12 months for our next opportunity which seemed just a bit too long. So regretfully we pulled up the anchor and headed off towards Colon where the Panama Canal was beckoning rather insistently.
