We were on our way back to Denarau to await the arrival of my sister, and decided to have another stop at Likuri Island (aka Robinson Crusoe Island). We only stayed one night here on the way to Kadavu and were keen to see their famous fire-dancing show.<\/p>\n

As we were coming into the reef pass there was a sight you don\u2019t see every day \u2013 a horse out on the reef at low tide, presumably there to carry the seaweed his owner was collecting.<\/p>\n

Likuri\u2019s a pretty spot and the resort is laid back and casual, catering mostly to the backpacker market I assume.<\/p>\n

Three times a week boatloads of tourists arrive from Denarau for the cultural show, and whilst that\u2019s normally not our thing, so many cruiser friends had talked about the fire-dancing that we had to go and see what all the fuss was about. It was also incredibly good value \u2013 for FJ$30 (roughlyAUD $18) we got a traditional \u2018lovo\u2019 feast plus the show (I think the punters from Denarau pay more like FJ$200!)<\/p>\n

The pre-recorded commentary and the music were a bit cringe-worthy, but the knife juggling and fire-dancing were certainly impressive and definitely hazardous. We heard from the staff (who make up most of the performers) that one of the knife jugglers cut their finger open the week before, and I assume that kerosene burns are part of the job description!<\/p>\n
